A vernier calliper is a basic mechanical device; its accuracy is achieved by moving a slide to measure lengths, diameters and depths to a 10th of a millimetre. The calliper has a main scale and a sliding part with a vernier. The vernier is an auxiliary scale on the movable part, which allows values smaller than the division on the main scale to be read. Depending on the design, it allows measuring external and internal dimensions as well as depth. The latest callipers may have a digital display added.
